The world’s smallest robotic crabs move due to the shape memory effect

The robots were assembled initially flat – this is their state in heating. A stretched rubber base was glued around the perimeter of the base, which was then loosened, resulting in a reduction of its area, and then the robots took the final “standing” shape, and to fix it, an additional glass coating was applied.

Why the crabs in particular? The assembly method and materials make it possible to create crawling robots of almost any shape or size. But students were amused by watching miniature crabs crawling in different directions. So the developers assure that it was more of a creative fantasy.
